Small Bathroom Renovation in Hong Kong: A Practical Planning Guide

Plan a compact bathroom layout, storage, tiling and waterproofing before you start comparing renovation quotes.

01Measure the room and map daily use

Start with the room's internal dimensions, door swing, windows, existing soil and water pipe positions, and the usable standing space beside each fitting. Mark where people enter, dry off, store toiletries, and reach towels. In a compact Hong Kong bathroom, keeping major plumbing in its current location can simplify coordination, but a site check is needed before deciding whether the layout can stay.

02Choose a layout that preserves usable space

A sliding or outward-opening door may improve access when the existing door conflicts with a basin or toilet, subject to building and fire-safety constraints. Wall-mounted storage can free floor area if the wall and fixing method are suitable. A shower screen can contain splashes without a bulky enclosure. Check the actual clearances and maintenance access with the proposed fittings rather than relying on a floor plan alone.

03Prioritise waterproofing and drainage

A durable bathroom depends on sound substrate preparation, correctly detailed floor-to-wall junctions, pipe penetrations and drain connections, plus a compatible waterproofing system. Ask what preparation and system are specified, how the drain and corners are treated, how long the layers need to cure, and what test is included before tiles cover the work. New grout or surface sealant does not by itself fix a leak behind a finished surface.

04Select tiles and fittings for the room

Look at tile samples under the bathroom's lighting and consider cleaning, slip resistance for the intended location, grout maintenance, and how cuts will land around drains and edges. Smaller tiles can help form a floor fall but create more grout joints; larger tiles have fewer joints but need a suitable substrate and careful setting. Check the real dimensions of basins, toilets, taps and storage before ordering.

05Plan ventilation, storage and lighting

Confirm how humid air leaves the bathroom and whether an existing fan or window can be retained or improved. Use task lighting at the mirror and appropriate fittings for the location. Recessed shelves can be useful only where the wall build-up, waterproofing and services allow them. A simple measured storage plan helps avoid a finished room with no convenient place for everyday items.

06Prepare a clear quotation request

Ask contractors to state demolition and disposal, protection, substrate repairs, waterproofing details and testing, tile supply and laying, plumbing and electrical work, fixtures, ventilation, schedule, exclusions and variation terms. Routine tile replacement may be treated differently from structural or other alteration work; the Buildings Department says classification depends on the specific works. Check current official guidance and building management requirements before the project starts.
