01Start by finding the cause of wall damage
Before repainting, inspect peeling paint, bubbling, mould-like marks, hairline cracks and water stains. A leak or persistent dampness needs investigation before new paint is applied; covering the mark can hide the symptom while the source remains. Photograph affected areas and note whether the condition changes after rain, plumbing use or ventilation.
02Preparation makes the finish
A sound result generally depends on protecting floors and furniture, removing loose coating, cleaning and drying the surface, filling suitable cracks, sanding and applying compatible primer where needed. Ask the painter to explain which preparation is included for your walls. The right approach differs between new plaster, previously painted surfaces, stained areas and surfaces with adhesion problems.
03Choose paint for the room and surface
Compare product data for the intended interior surface, cleanability, sheen, coverage and application conditions. Kitchens and bathrooms have different moisture exposure from bedrooms, but paint should not be treated as a substitute for fixing leaks or improving ventilation. Review physical colour samples in the room's daylight and evening lighting before selecting the final shade.
04Plan around Hong Kong humidity and ventilation
Follow the paint maker's instructions for temperature, ventilation, drying and recoating. Keep windows or ventilation operating as advised and avoid closing a freshly painted space too soon. If the walls are damp, first identify why they are not drying; simply waiting longer or applying extra coats may not address the underlying issue.
05What a painting quotation should say
Request the rooms and surfaces, preparation steps, number of coats, primer and paint product, protection and clean-up, treatment of cracks or stains, exclusions, estimated schedule and variation process in writing. Confirm whether moving furniture and repairing water damage are included. Compare the written scope and finish standard instead of comparing only the number of coats or total price.
