Built-In Wardrobes for Small Hong Kong Flats: Planning Before You Order

Plan wardrobe depth, door clearance, internal storage and ventilation around the actual dimensions and daily use of a compact flat.

01Measure the finished space, not just the wall

Record wall width and height at several points, skirting, beams, sockets, switches, windows, door swings and any pipes or access panels. Check the route for bringing panels or assembled units into the flat, including lift and corridor limits. Uneven walls and ceilings are common reasons a built-in needs careful site measurement before fabrication.

02Plan the door and walking clearance

Compare hinged and sliding doors against the bed, room entrance and circulation path. Hinged doors need clear swing space; sliding doors need track and overlap allowances and do not expose the entire wardrobe opening at once. Confirm handle projection and access to drawers with a full-size plan or taped floor outline.

03Design storage around what you own

List hanging garments, folded clothing, luggage, linens and daily accessories, then decide which need the easiest access. A mix of hanging rails, adjustable shelves and drawers is often more adaptable than a fixed interior made only for one use. Check drawer extension and shelf reach at the actual installed height.

04Consider materials, ventilation and maintenance

Ask for board or timber specifications, edge finishing, hardware details, cleaning guidance and the installation method. Avoid blocking ventilation grilles, electrical panels or service access. If the room has dampness or condensation, address ventilation and moisture before enclosing the wall with new cabinetry.

05Get the carpentry scope in writing

A wardrobe quotation should state measured dimensions, internal layout, door style, material and finish, hardware, handles, delivery, installation, site protection, wall fixing assumptions and exclusions. Confirm who is responsible for checking concealed services and how changes after approval affect price and lead time. Review a dimensioned drawing before fabrication begins.
