01Treat repeated trips as a warning
A circuit breaker or residual-current device that trips repeatedly may be responding to overload, a faulty appliance, damaged wiring or another electrical fault. The cause cannot be confirmed from the switch position alone. Do not keep resetting a breaker that trips again, bypass protection, or open a consumer unit to investigate.
02Know when to stop using equipment
Stop using the affected appliance or circuit if you notice burning smells, unusual heat, buzzing, sparks, discolouration or a shock sensation. Keep people away from the area. If there is smoke or fire, leave and contact emergency services. Never touch electrical equipment with wet hands or while standing in water.
03What information to record
If it is safe, note which lights or sockets lost power, what was running at the time, whether the trip followed rain or water ingress, and whether the problem is isolated or affects the whole flat. Do not intentionally recreate the fault. These details help a registered electrical contractor decide what inspection is appropriate.
04Choose qualified help
For electrical installation work in Hong Kong, check that the contractor and workers have the registration required for the specific work under current Electrical and Mechanical Services Department rules. Ask for the inspection scope, repair proposal, materials, testing or certification that applies, and a written quotation. Do not rely on an online article to diagnose wiring or electrical protection.
05After the repair
Ask the electrician to explain the identified cause, what was repaired, any limitations, and whether a test record or certificate applies to the work. If the trip was associated with a leak or damp area, make sure the water source is also addressed by the appropriate professional before the electrical equipment is put back into service.
Verify current registration requirements with the Electrical and Mechanical Services Department's registered electrical contractor directory.
